Ethical Design Co.

Ethical Design Co. is a full-service brand and digital design agency committed to designing a better world. Their work aims to “address real business and human need in a time of climate crisis”.

What I love most about this agency is their social conscience. Since looking more deeply into ethical Graphic Design for my dissertation this year I’ve developed a strong interest in using design for good.

Run by creative designer Sonja Meyer and passionate social advocate Caitlin Jordan, the company work with clients and partners from all over the world. They operate with a shared vision of working “toward social change and environmental sustainability”.

So, what drives them?

They believe that designers should use their problem-solving skills “to find creative and longer-lasting human-centred solutions to meet real global needs” and they prefer to work with businesses and organisations that share those values.

I love their commitment to sustainable outcomes, rather than solely commercial ones. I fully believe that design can make a big impact on the world and that with the incredible creative problem-solving skills designers have, we have the potential to think outside the box and solve some issues that seem insurmountable to most.

OnRoute App UI Mockups

One of their projects was a redesign of an app called OnRoute to make it easier to navigate, with better UX and more features. They chose to work with OnRoute as it’s aimed at conscious travellers who are not interested in “package tourism that can be harmful and destructive to cultures and sacred sites. By sharing their unique journeys, OnRoute users can inspire others to think more carefully about their own travels.

Ethical Design Co. definitely practice what they preach. At the time of writing this, they have planted 350 trees (with fifteen trees) to offset carbon emisssions, taken on 13 pro bono projects over nine years and visited 41 countries in search of cultural understanding.

Recently they’ve produced an online course: Change the World as a Sustainable Designer, intended to teach designers how to look beyond commercial outcomes to find solutions that are more ethical and responsible. This something I will definitely be enrolling in once I’ve completed my uni deadlines!

I find it inspiring that such a company exists and thrives and it gives me hope that I will one day get to work for one like it. If you’re interested in seeing any more work from Ethical Design Co. please see the link below.
